I am beyond thrilled to announce that long-time resident, Buttercup, found her forever home today! It may have taken over a year to find the perfect match, but she's finally happy at home!

We were honored to work with this family to prepare their home for her, and ensure they had all they needed for this big adorable girl. We were also able to provide a bed, food, toys, and ID tags for this girl, as well as pay for her adoption fee!

We are very excited to announce that we have selected the 2014 Volunteers of the Year!

We are very excited to announce that we have selected the 2014 Volunteers of the Year!

This year's Volunteers of the Year are Leon Gurinsky and Doreen Onishea!

The two of them have both displayed outstanding commitment to our rescue, the Islip Animal Shelter, and most importantly all of the animals in need! They have attended and volunteered at nearly every event this year, ensured the dogs get out and get socialized on a regular basis, and are always spreading the word about about animals for adoption and upcoming events. We're so honored to have them as a part of our group and can't wait to formally recognize them at our annual dinner, some time in March. (Details for that will be released soon. We're ironing out details.)

We'd like to thank everyone who made 2014 a success! Together, we've accomplished some great things. We're looking forward to a wonderful 2015 full of dog kisses, tail wags, and adoptions! Happy New Year everyone!

Lady is a total sweetheart who just wants a comfy and loving home. She'll be officially adopted once we know for sure she can get along with her new cat siblings. :)

2014 Annual Holiday Toy Drive at Islip Animal Shelter Another Great Success

Posted by livelovebarkdogrescue on December 30, 2014 at 2:25 PM Comments comments (0)

The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center recently hosted its third Annual Holiday Toy Drive, sponsored by the shelter’s volunteer group, Live.Love.Bark, which was successful in collecting more than 300 gallons of toys for dogs, cats and two rabbits. This year’s donations far surpassed the amount collected in previous years. Families across Long Island stopped by the Shelter’s annual Toy Drive which was held on Saturday, December 13, to place treats and toys in the 90+ holiday stockings that hang on each animal’s cage.

In addition to toys and treats, nearly 700 pounds of pet food, an abundance of dog bone boxes, and an impressive amount of collars, leashes, laundry detergent, dish soap, towels, blankets, and sheets were also donated. Various supporters and local companies also donated items or baskets to raffle at Toy Drive, while Live.Love.Bark sold merchandise including shirts, sweatshirts, and 2015 calendars that brought in more than $1600.00, which will be used towards the health and care of the nearly 100 adoptable animals that reside at the shelter.

“This event has gotten bigger and better every year, and it is encouraging to see so many people, residents and non-residents from all over Long Island, coming down to our shelter to make a difference,” said Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt.

During the four-hour fundraiser, one cat was adopted and eight adoption applications for dogs were filed. Six of those eight have already been approved. Those pets will be going to their new forever homes sometime before the holidays.

“The most important thing about these fundraisers is that they raise awareness and encourage people to go down to the shelter and adopt an animal. Each animal there deserves a home, especially for the holidays, and it’s thanks to all these donations that they’re able to be happy and spoiled while they wait for that home,” noted Town Clerk Olga Murray

The Annual Holiday Toy Drive was started in 2012, with the donation of holiday stockings for each animal at the shelter. Now sponsored by Live.Love.Bark, the event has tripled in size, collecting much more than just toy donations. In its first year, the Toy Drive saw approximately 50 people visit the shelter to support the effort, whereas this year, nearly 200 families walked the halls, stuffing the stockings and visiting with the animals.

To view photographs from this event, please visit Live.Love.Bark’s Facebook page. To donate items, please drop off donations at the shelter between 9:30 am and 3:30 pm, Monday through Saturday, at 210 South Denver Ave. in Bay Shore. To make a monetary donation, please donate to Live.Love.Bark, who will go out and purchase necessary donations for the shelter, by visiting their website at
